Social Media: A Roast

Infuriating
the necessary evils
we must contend with in today's world
I'm not even talking about
politics
I'm talking about social
media
more like social bleedia
pouring ourselves into
a marketing abyss
we're all a one-man brand
a business
platforms for self advertisement
and we all vomit
on each other
a constant barrage
of curated garbage
page after page of
variations on a theme
variations on a theme
for what
a moment of recognition
or feigned social connection
a chance at fame
or just for the sake
of running a business
Youtubers are the new
movie stars
it takes a lot of work
endless amounts of exhausting
work
to have an online presence
and then gradually
instead of being a part
of our own experiences
we view them
detachedly
as if from a director's chair
ready to yell cut
at any moment
retake the scene
to get a better shot
again, with more emotion
and like a moth to flame
click scroll click scroll click scroll
like eating too much cookie dough
I always wind up feeling sick
and a little sheepish
and all this innocent
scrolling clicking scrolling clicking
further entrenches
our tribalism
spreads lies
tears at the seams
of an already fragile
democracy
but is it realistic to withdraw
from these platforms now
is it possible to exist
as a luddite anymore
or how
can we be authentic in these contexts
that were designed
for social manipulation
how much of our days are we willing
to give over to this artificial
cyber reality
and what is it taking from us
in return?
